Why an empty home is the whole point
A move-in clean is not simply a deep clean with a different name. It is the one moment when every surface in the home is reachable — inside every cabinet, the backs of closets, the floor beneath where the sofa will sit, the wall behind the refrigerator. Once you unpack, a good portion of that becomes inaccessible for as long as you live there.
That is why the timing matters: schedule it after the previous occupants are out and before your belongings arrive.

Move-in vs move-out cleaning
The task lists overlap heavily — both happen in an empty home — but the purpose differs. A move-out clean is performed to a landlord’s or buyer’s standard, with your deposit or closing in mind. A move-in clean is performed to your standard, so the home is genuinely sanitary before your family lives in it. If you are handling both ends of a move, they are two separate jobs at two separate addresses.
Do I need one if the home looks clean?
Usually, yes. A home that has been cleaned for showings looks presentable, but presentation cleaning and sanitising are not the same thing. Someone else lived in that kitchen, bathed in those tubs, and stored food in those cabinets. The visible surfaces are typically fine; the insides of cabinets, appliances, and closets rarely are.
This matters most for new babies, anyone with allergies, and homes where pets previously lived.
When to schedule it
Book for the window after closing or key handover and before the movers arrive — even a few hours is enough. If the schedule is tight, an empty-house clean on moving morning still works; it is far better than cleaning around boxes. New construction is a different job again: see post-construction cleaning for drywall dust and builder residue.
